You have been dreaming about this moment for a long time and it is finally starting to come true, you are getting ready to go to college. But, do you know what major you will be choosing? Have you taken the time to really think about what you want to be? While most people have a very good idea what they want to do in life, for many the options are so numerous it is difficult to choose just one, and with college only a few applications away, reality can start rearing its head.
The first, and best, step to take when choosing a college major, is to do it at least one year before you start looking at colleges. This way you can focus your search only on those that offer the major you have chosen. While a change of major mid way is always feasible, it is not always a viable solution and you may end up in a college that does not offer the career you really want.
To choose a college major you must always take the direct approach and question yourself about what you like and would feel comfortable doing for the rest of your life. To that effect, making a list of your interests and skills is a very good step towards narrowing down the options. Ask yourself what subjects you like the most and what you envision for your future, as well as the type of work you enjoy and what your career assessment test in school shows.
Once you have detailed your list, start looking for career choices that offer the same items you wrote down. If you enjoy the outdoors and subjects such as science and geography, you may want to look into geology for your major. If, on the other hand, you enjoy an office environment, together with math and computers, a career in technology may be your best choice.
Regardless of what major you ultimately choose, make sure it is one that will provide the satisfaction you seek for the rest of your life, which in turn will make you a happy and productive adult.
